Movie Trailer Discussion Post

Everyone loves a good movie trailer, but have you noticed that sometimes you’ll see the same movie with different trailers? That’s because they are trying to reach different audiences and appeal to a variety of crowds so that more people will see the movie!

Instructions:
For this activity, you will be watching TWO movie trailers for The Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides. Your assignment will be to compare the two trailers and to answer the questions below.  To answer the questions thoroughly, you will need to research movie trailers and how they are created, as well.

Resources:
Flanagan, M. (n.d.) How to edit a trailer that will get your film noticed.  MicroFilmmaker Magazine.  Retrieved from http://www.microfilmmaker.com/tipstrick/Issue14/Edit_Trl.html.

Greene, F. (2001, November 29).  Trailer editing: a lot like feature film editing, only more so.  Movie Trailers 101.  Retrieved from http://movietrailers101.wordpress.com/2011/11/29/trailer-editing-just-like-feature-film-editing-only-more-so/.

Questons to Answer in Discussion:
1. What audience do you feel that each trailer was trying to reach and how can you tell?
2. How are these trailers alike?  How are they different?
3. How can the editing, graphics, music, and actors shown influence different audiences to be encouraged to see the film?
4. What are techniques that movie trailer editors use to create effective trailers?

Before you begin working, look at the RUBRIC to see how your work will be assessed. Your answers should be written in correct grammar. Each answer should be at least two well-written paragraphs.

Then, make sure you respond to at least two of your peers with comments or questions of their analysis. Compare your answer with theirs or provide other resources you found that justify or negate their response.
